Distance:
The Presidio Tunnel Tops area has paved walkways and large grassy areas, as well as stairs between the upper viewing areas and the lower playground area and other facilities. Visitors can pick a bench and have a snack while looking at the great views without walking far at all, or can explore all the paved trails, the playground and indoor facilities, and also extend walking by exploring the Main Post and Crissy Field.
Considerations:
General note: All information is subject to change based on current health and safety guidelines.
• Sun protection and water, as well as extra layers for chilly winds, are always advisable. Sometimes these are necessary within the same half hour as temperatures can change quickly.
• There are paid parking spots around the Presidio, and Tunnel Tops is close to the Presidio Transit Center where the free PresidiGo Shuttle and some MUNI bus lines stop. Parking at Crissy Field East Beach is free.
• There are toilet facilities at the Presidio Transit Center, and near the playground area.
• There are plenty of sitting options for taking breaks and soaking up the views, whether on sculptural wooden benches or on patch of grass in the large lawn areas.
• There are special picnic areas and event facilities available to reserve for group events.
• The playground has a creative variety of play structures big enough even for adults to climb on.
The trail:
The Presidio Tunnel Tops is a long-awaited creative solution to connecting the Presidio Main Post with Crissy Field by building a park and vista spots over the traffic tunnels that connect San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Visitors can start from the bottom either by walking from Crissy Field East Beach or from paid parking along Mason St., including parking spots that used to be part of Sports Basement. Starting from the bottom means entering at the playground level. The playground has fun nature-based structures that even bigger people can play on.
The lower level also includes the Field Station which welcomes visitors indoors, Crissy Field Center which is for reserved events. Picnic benches are scattered around the area.
On the upper level, there are large lawns and paved pathways that offer dramatic views, as well as a variety of seating options. There is a campfire circle not far from the Presidio Visitor Center and Transit Center, and food trucks can often be found around Tunnel Tops.
Check out the Tunnel Tops interactive map (https://www.presidiotunneltops.gov/visit/interactive-map) for more information.
Whether you’re up for a long walk on Crissy Beach followed by exploring Tunnel Tops, or just wish to park at the Main Post and find a bench with a view to look out at the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, Tunnel Tops has something good to offer everyone.
