Distance:
The walk from the parking pull-off on Conzelman Road near the Bicentennial Camp Picnic Area downhill to the actual campground area is about 100 yards. There are short trails around the periphery of the campground itself. For those wishing for long hikes, there are many miles of trails in the Marin Headlands to walk that can start from the Bicentennial Campground and picnic area, and a variety of trailheads a short drive from there. See Hike Search by Area for many other Marin Headlands hikes to try.
Considerations:
General note: All information is subject to change based on current health and safety guidelines.
• The Bicentennial Campground has its own parking area but cars are not allowed to park overnight without a permit.
• There is a portable toilet at the campground and there are vault toilets at the Bicentennial Camp Picnic Area.
• Follow health, safety signs, and wildlife information signs, especially information on food storage and safety at the campground.
• Having a poison oak scrub like Technu is handy for any trail.
• As with any Bay Area outing, bring layers. You may be hot in the sun one moment and shivering under fog and a chilly breeze the next.
The trail:
For those who wish to go camping very close to San Francisco, the Bicentennial Campground in the Marin Headlands is one of the closest options. There are three campsites that include barbecue grills, food lockers and picnic tables. There is a portable toilet on site at the campground and vault toilets just up the hill at the Bicentennial Camp Picnic Area slightly further along Conzelman Road.
We have never camped here, but have enjoyed walking around the camp area. There are great views across the water to San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge from the peripheral trails around the camping area. At the top of the hill, from the Bicentennial Camp Picnic Area, there are stunning views of the rolling hills of the Marin Headlands.
For those who are not up for an overnight stay, the picnic area has broader views and more picnic area space. This location is also close to the Battery Wallace-Marin Headlands View Path walk, which offers even more amazing views across the water.
