Marshall’s Beach from Immigrant Point
(scroll to bottom for photo gallery)
Starting Point: Immigrant Point Overlook, Washington Blvd., San Francisco, CA 94129, in the Presidio
General vicinity: Presidio, northwest area near Golden Gate Bridge entrance
Specific location: Immigrant Point Overlook, Washington Blvd., just southwest of Rob Hill Campground, on a curve of Washington Blvd. (slightly south of Kobbe Ave., key connecting road from Lincoln Blvd. that parallels the coast)
On a trail map, look for the Batteries to Bluffs Trail. A trail shown between Lincoln and Washington indicates the stairs with Immigrant Point at the east side.

Distance (approximate distances):
Total: Less than a 2 mile loop, but involves many stairs with some steep hill trail sections
Stairway from Immigrant Point Overlook down to Lincoln Blvd.: Approximately 0.3 miles
Batteries to Bluffs Trail section: 0.7 miles
From north end of Batteries to Bluffs Trail, short distance on Lincoln, diagonal connection onto Washington past Kobbe back to Immigrant Overlook parking: Approximately 0.6 miles
Considerations:
• The Presidio is a confusing place for many people to drive, walk, or bike, simply because there doesn’t feel like there’s much rhyme or reason to the curving roads and how they interconnect. It’s not so bad once you become familiar, but starting out, it helps to have a map, someone who knows the area, or a GPS system handy.
• There are no toilet facilities directly along this hike. The Presidio web site notes the closest restrooms as being at the Fort Scott Ballfield, near the intersection of Lincoln Boulevard and Storey Avenue.
• There are several parking spots along Immigrant Point Overlook itself, as well as several spots across the road.
• Marshall’s Beach has long been popular as a clothing-optional beach, FYI so visitors aren’t surprised.
The trail:
Immigrants Point Overlook offers glorious views facing Baker Beach to the south and the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin Headlands and beyond to the north. The overlook was created as a tribute to those who immigrated via the Golden Gate.
A long stairway through trees leads down the hill from Immigrant Point to connect to Lincoln Blvd. Be alert for traffic as there is no stop sign at this crossing to the Batteries to Bluffs Trail.
Heading northwest toward the Golden Gate Bridge and Marin, the Batteries to Bluffs trail twists and turns through open views as well as brushy areas past Battery Crosby, one of many old military ruins that can be found in San Francisco and Marin.
The Batteries to Bluffs Trail includes pretty stairs as well as dirt trail stretches.
When you see stairs to your left leading directly west, you are on your way to Marshall’s Beach. The stairway offers beautiful vistas.
The beach itself is relatively small and somewhat hidden, perhaps adding to popularity as a nude beach.
As with any other beach along the Pacific, use caution and be aware of sneaker waves and riptides.
Marshall’s Beach offers a stunningly close view of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Once back up the stairs from the beach, continue northward on the Batteries to Bluffs Trail, which gets a bit twistier and goes through brushier areas on the way up the hill. Remember to take breaks to turn around and enjoy the scenery behind you as you climb.
At the top of the hill, walk south along Lincoln Blvd. until you see the diagonal connection with Washington Blvd. Cross Lincoln, walk up Washington past Kobbe, and continue along Washington until you reach the Immigrant Point Overlook again.
