Time spent in nature is universally powerful therapy, and is particularly helpful for those suffering from sensory overload. Over the years, stories about miracle cures and total recovery from autism have dangled before us. We have not had a miracle cure, nor do we know anyone who has.
Daily life is still very challenging, but it is better than yesterday, and the day before that. For an Alzheimer's patient, music may be a magic trigger that helps. For another it may the kindness of a therapist or helper. For Sean, time spent moving outdoors offered a crucial turning point. Since an initial breakthrough period with the help of his teacher (In Memory and Thanks, Just Get to the Trailhead: Journey Out of Autism Isolation (title updated from Getting Sean Out: An Autism Journey to the Outside World)), Sean has continued to work with wonderful helpers, and has expanded his horizons exponentially. His feet have pounded miles of trails along the Northern California coast, despite ongoing challenges. |
