Distance:
Tank Hill is a 2.8 acre park which is mostly a rocky outcropping that does not offer a great deal of trail distance, but going up and down from the stair entrances and walking around the upper circle area offers pretty good exercise.
Considerations:
• There are no toilet facilities here.
• There is stair access from Twin Peaks Blvd. near Clarendon/Crown Terrace, and from Belgrave Ave.
• Heed health and safety as well as wildlife (e.g. coyote) information signs.
The trail:
We parked along Twin Peaks Blvd. at a bit of a distance from the stair that leads up to the trail from Twin Peaks near Clarendon/Crown Terrace, but starting from Belgrave Ave. is another good option. Along Twin Peaks Blvd., slightly downhill from the stairway, there is a little viewing area cutting into the side of the park. Vibrant wildflowers colored the hillside during our April visit.
Once up the stairs from Twin Peaks Blvd., there is a relatively short path leading to the open circle area at the top. This circle has trees around it, but once past the wooden fence heading toward the rocky outcrop area, the view is wide open. There is a bench that guards the hilltop waiting for people to sit.
Tank Hill is at an elevation of 650 feet, and offers a panoramic view, with many of San Francisco’s noted hills in view. On a clear day, visitors can see all the way to Point Reyes.
Tank Hill offers habitat for rare butterflies as well as snakes, lizards, and birds of prey. Wildflowers change the hill colors from March through May. We spotted quite a variety of wildflowers in April, including a range of yellow, orange, pink and purple blossoms.
The views over the city are spectacular, and Mount Diablo looms in the distance across the bay. For a short walk, Tank Hill has plenty of visual treasures to offer.
