Distance:
The Lyon Street Steps only cover two blocks (long and steep!), but we use this as a scenic start and end for a Presidio walk. We start at the top of the steps and make a loop so we only have to descend the steps as we enjoy the bay view. Visitors will see plenty of fitness enthusiasts repeatedly going up and down the steps for the built in cardio challenge.
Considerations:
• Toilet facilities are not available at general street locations like the Lyon Street Steps. Check visitor facilities within the Presidio.
• Follow parking rule signs for street parking or parking on roads within the Presidio.
• Heed health and safety as well as parking and traffic information signs.
The trail:
The Lyon Street Steps only cover two blocks, so unless you’re running up and down the steps for a fitness activity, you won’t get a long walk just with the steps. Some people may just feel like enjoying the view from the top.
We like to make a nice 1.5 to 2 mile loop walk with the steps as our starting feature. We start near the Presidio gate at Presidio and Pacific. We walk to Lyon and Broadway to the top of the steps, already getting some cardio with the uphill climb to get there.
There are charming houses and street views in the area, even more so with the views from the top of the stairs and then down at the middle level stopping point with the heart shaped statue, magnolia trees, and classic structural elements for a viewing break facing the bay.
Walking down the remaining steep and more functional stairs leading to Green Street, we then follow the stone wall alongside the Presidio to the Presidio gate entrance at Lyon and Lombard Streets. Once inside the Presidio, we follow Lombard to Presidio Blvd., turn left on Presidio and walk until we reach the intersection with Liggett Ave.
This is where walkers can climb the gradual incline up the Lovers’ Lane paved path that is lined by lovely eucalyptus trees on one side and marked by charming old Presidio buildings on the other. A slight detour to the left will lead walkers to Andy Goldsworthy’s Wood Line (Wood Line - Presidio) for an extra scenic component of the walk.
Whether staying on Lovers’ Lane or following to the end of Wood Line, walkers will be back by the starting point of the Presidio Gate at Pacific Ave. and Presidio Blvd./Ave. There’s are several uphill components this walk, so you’ll have burned at least a few calories by the end.
