Distance:
Battery Bluff Park covers six acres along the Presidio Promenade Trail. Visitors can gauge their walking distance using the numerous trail signs that note destinations and distances. Visitors can reach many areas of the Presidio from this park, and make a walk as short or long as they wish.
Considerations:
General note: All information is subject to change based on current health and safety guidelines.
• Sun protection and water, as well as extra layers for chilly winds, are always advisable. Sometimes these are necessary within the same half hour as temperatures can change quickly.
• There are paid parking spots around the Presidio Main Post, and Battery Bluff Park is a 10-minute walk from the Presidio Center where the free PresidiGo Shuttle and some MUNI bus lines stop.
• The closest toilet facilities are at the Presidio Transit Center, with other portable facilities available at the Main Post.
• Use caution when climbing around battery structures.
• Heed health and safety notices, including wildlife alerts.
The trail:
We parked in one of the Presidio paid lots behind the Walt Disney Family Museum and then walked along the path on Lincoln Blvd. (facing the Golden Gate Bridge, away from downtown). This part of the path gives a view of the tunnel traffic below. There is a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge right from the start.
The path along Lincoln Blvd. leads right into Battery Bluff Park. There are smooth, paved pathways throughout this area that was never open to the public until the recent renovation. Historic military batteries Blaney, Baldwin, Slaughter and Sherwood were used to defend San Francisco Bay from the hilltop above Crissy Field. Unlike the atmospheric ruins of some other historic battery sites, these have been updated to be a modern structural part of the landscape.
Battery Bluff Park offers picnic tables and benches for a break with a view. There are three scenic overlooks that provide views of Alcatraz, Angel Island, the Marin Headlands, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Pacific Ocean. Visitors can walk a trail that leads under the freeway structure, which is an interesting experience.
At path junctures, there are trail signs indicating destination points and their respective distances. The National Cemetery, the Golden Gate Bridge, Crissy Field Overlook, Fort Point, and Crissy Field are just some of the destinations noted. The overall trail complex is called the Presidio Promenade, and Battery Bluff Park is one small section of it.
Those interested in the Presidio National Cemetery are just across Lincoln Blvd. from it. The hallowed ground of the cemetery has its own aesthetic beauty with headstones aligned along rolling hills.
Battery Bluffs Park covers a short distance but offers wonderful views, places to sit and rest, historical information, and connecting trails to many other locations. Presidio Tunnel Tops is the other new feature of the Presidio (opening two weeks after this Battery Bluffs-The Presidio Hike Notes was first posted).
