Distance:
Ina Coolbrith Park is a 0.8 acre park that includes numerous stairways and is reachable by the steep climb to the top of Russian Hill at the top of Taylor and Vallejo Streets. What it lacks in walking distance, it makes up for with the steep hill and stair challenges. Visitors can include Ina Coolbrith Park in combination with Macondray Lane-San Francisco City Walk, or make it part of a longer walk from North Beach, Chinatown or the Fisherman’s Wharf area. (Click Hike Search by Area and look in the San Francisco section for other San Francisco City Walks or Hill Walks)
Considerations:
General note: All information is subject to change based on current health and safety guidelines.
• Parking rules are specific to each neighborhood and street in San Francisco. Check parking signs carefully if going by car.
• There are no public toilets in the immediate vicinity of Ina Coolbrith Park. The nearest might be the park restrooms at Washington Square.
• Heed health and safety notices, including wildlife alerts.
• San Francisco weather can switch between chilly and foggy and warm and sunny in the blink of an eye. We always bring layers.
The trail:
The steep, hilly parts of San Francisco feature several tiny parks as well as charming pedestrian-only pathways. Some of these hidden treasures offer stunning views of San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz, the Bay Bridge, and the cityscape.
Right at the top of Russian Hill, at Taylor and Vallejo Streets, is Ina Coolbrith Park. Ina Coolbrith came to California with her family by covered wagon train in 1851 when she was ten years old. She became a teacher, a poet, and knew Mark Twain, Joaquin Miller, and Bert Harte.
Coolbrith lived at Taylor Street, a block from where her namesake park is located. She later moved to Oakland and worked as a librarian, and was eventually named California’s first poet laureate.
It’s challenging to climb to the top of Russian Hill, and visitors might easily miss seeing this scenic little park. Those who do visit will find charming stairs and benches with stellar views at every turn, with Coit Tower framed particularly nicely from multiple locations.
It is possible to find street parking nearby and just visit the park, or combine this with a walk along Macondray Lane-San Francisco City Walk, or to include this as part of a longer walk from North Beach, Chinatown or the Fisherman’s Wharf area. (Click Hike Search by Area and look in the San Francisco section for other San Francisco City Walks or Hill Walks)
