Greenwich Observatory Walk, London
Walk contributed by: Alec Shigeta
Walk/trail: Greenwich town walk leading to the Royal Observatory,G London, starting from the station near Greenwich Market and the Cutty Sark, walking past the National Maritime Museum and up the hill to the Royal Observatory
Location: Royal Observatory, Greenwich Park, London, UK
Walk distance: The distance will increase depending on which station visitors arrive from, Greenwich, Maze Hill, or Cutty Sark (DLR line). The path for our walk starting from the DLR Cutty Sark Station to the Royal Observatory is a little under 1 mile one-way, for a 2 mile out and back walk. We, like most visitors, did a lot of extra walking at the various sites we visited.
Highlights: Starting at the DLR Cutty Sark station, we stepped out into Greenwich and felt the flavor of the town, then stopped by the historic clipper ship, Cutty Sark. We ambled through the pleasant Greenwich Market, then walked through a broad green park area lined by historic buildings, passed by the National Maritime Museum, and came into the spacious, green Greenwich Park. There were many people lounging on blankets in the open spaces as we followed the trail to the Royal Observatory. It is possible to stand on a line marking the prime meridian and take a photo without paying the fee to enter the Royal Observatory, but we chose the full experience of seeing the Observatory and standing at the inside prime meridian mark. In addition to open spaces, the path also includes charming tree tunnel stretches, and we were surprised to see a fox on the park grounds, despite many people being around.
